SentrySafe SFW123DSB 1.23 Cubic Feet Combination Fire-Safe, Medium Grey is one of the best gun safe by SentrySafe. SentrySafe SFW123DSB reviewThis brand has been a global leader in the safe industry for over 80 years, producing more fire-safe security containers than any other company in the world protecting your important and irreplaceable valuables from theft, fire, water.

SentrySafe SFW123DSB model comes with dual combination lock & key.. The safe weighs 90 pounds which is great as we said. It can serve as fire-proof protection for important paperwork, as well as protecting valuables from thieves. The safe can be bolted down for extra security from theft, but it loses its water-resistance when you do that.

The push-button electronic lock is easy to use. You don’t have to remember to turn left, then right, or go past a number before settling on it again. Just push the buttons, watch the light turn green, and pull the handle down. Done. Though the safe comes with a factory code, you can program it to use another code that’s easier to remember. Then you don’t have to worry about losing your owner’s manual or forgetting the code.

This safe is water-proof, fire-proof, and hard to break into.  The keypad also has a light that flashes when the battery is low, and a red light that tells you the code you entered was wrong. If you make three wrong guesses it will go into delay mode, which shuts down the lock system for 2 minutes.

access. 16.5″ Wide x 7.75″ Tall x 14.5″ Depth with 31 pounds of weight has enough room to store multiple handgun and other valuables.

Though it’s not fireproof but .25 inch solid Steel is definitely enough to ensure your safety. It has easy programmable fingerprint scanner biometric technology and can store 30 different fingerprints in memory. This allows you to give access whom you want and restrict others from opening.

Yeah, its fingerprint scanner needs battery but you don’t need to worry about that for two years once changed! That’s definitely cool. Whatever, if you forget the date I mean if that battery goes down? You’re getting 2 manual backup keys for that kind of situation. But don’t worry, if the battery is getting low, you’ll be notified with three repetitive beeps.

Our Gun Safe Buying Guide

Gun safe buyers start here with our tips and tricks guide.

What should you consider when purchasing a gun safe?

While security and natural disaster protection are important they are not the only considerations when looking for a good locker for your firearms. There are other considerations which are also important.

1. Rust protection

Sad, as it may be many firearms will rust. Many people who have left their weapons in a cupboard return some time later to find a thin film of rust on the outside (and inside!) of the weapon. Rust protection is a serious issue, and your weapons can rust both outside a safe and inside.

Of cours, if you don’t own a good locker then rust protection is up to you. But if you do then that locker should also protect your firearms from rust.Rusty Gun
One of the most important aspects of rust protection is that there are solid and effective seals around the inside of the door. Any quality gun safe should be fully sealed, this should be part of the fire protection.

But if your safe doesn’t have any seals around the door it’s extremely important, particularly if you live in a moist and humid environment, that you attach seals to help prevent the entry of humid air.

A Palusol door seal will help keep moisture out of your safe as well as provide some fire protection. No door seal at all is a disaster in a fire, and it allows moisture to get in increasing the risk of rust.
Palusol is an expandable material which is triggered by heat. As it heats up it expands enormously increasing pressure in the seal and thereby helping keep it out.

And a few extra steps to prevent rust are useful. Gun socks will help keep water away from that precious metal and there are also rust protection products such as Boeshield T-9 or use a dehumidifier.

2. The hinges on the gun safe

The door of a safe is always hinged so that you can open it. Some have interior hinges and others have exterior hinges. Which is best?

Many people assume that interior hinges are best, because a potential thief is unable to get at the hinges and break them. This in fact is not necessarily the case.

The hinges are only present on the safe to allow for the opening of the door. Even if a thief is able to cut the hinges this in no way compromises the security of the safe, or at least compromises the security of a good one. Even with the hinges cut a good cabinet will stay locked, and any thief will be unable to open the door without breaking the locks. There are, however, exceptions to this amongst the cheaper and lower quality safes, particularly those with limited door bolts.

Interior hinges restrict the range of movement of the door, and can make the safe less user-friendly. Exterior hinges allow for a greater range of movement of the door. Some exterior hinges even allow for the removal of the door, which may be necessary, for example, if the locks need servicing.

Hinges are not a part of the security system of any good locker.

3. Securing your safe from theft

burglar stealing safeOne issue always worth considering with any smaller safe is fixing it to something solid.

For instance, many of the Barska gun safes, whilst being very handy and quick to operate, are relatively light because they are small.

The thief doesn’t have to steal your gun, he can always just steal your whole safe, which is perfectly possible if it’s relatively small and light.

Whilst it might take quite some time for a thief to break into your safe they may do so eventually if they know what they are doing. (Not necessarily though if you look at some of the super secure Liberty gun safes, some of them have successfully withstood 5 hours of attack)

However, a smart thief will steal the safe itself rather than spending the time necessary to break into it and increase the risk of being caught.

One of the best ways of protecting your safe from being stolen is to secure it to the floor. A good safe should make allowances for it to be bolted to the floor, with holes in the floor of the safe, and it should be securely bolted down, preferably to concrete but if not then to solid timber.

Some safes also have a thin floor or back, and can be subject to entry if a smart thief can tip the safe over to enter through the floor or through the rear, though this is not common.

Weight alone is not sufficient to ensure that your gun cabinet stays where it is. A smart thief can steal a safe easily, even a heavy one. Half a dozen golf balls placed under a safe and it can be rolled out the door.

Here’s how you secure your safe to the floor:

4. Metal thickness

The overwhelming majority of security in a safe is created by two factors. The strength and thickness of the metal that it is made from and the quality of the door and number and quality of the door bolts. 10 gauge steel is adequate, 8 gauge or thicker is better. Of course the thicker the steel the more expensive the locker.

Just about any steel can be penetrated eventually, but the thicker the better. For example 12 gauge single panel steel can be penetrated with a blow from a simple fire axe.

Despite the fact that just about any steel can be penetrated more resistant steel will deter most thieves. The majority of burglaries are by thieves looking for a quick pick up. They want to grab anything of value and run. If a few attempts on the safe aren’t effective they will go for something else in the house. They are unlikely to bring tools such as concrete saws with them just to cut through a very solid safe.

5. UL certification

UL stands for Underwriters Laboratories. UL is a safety testing and certification organization and they test gun safes amongst other things.

UL use a range of different methods to test the security of gun cabinets, including hiring professional safe crackers to see if they can break in. They also employ a range of other Gun Safe Test methods to test the security of the lock, the handle and any other part of the safe that can be broken into.

After that, they examine the engineering drawings of any safe tested. They are able to examine the security mechanisms, develop a plan to attack the safe and then attempt to break in within 5 minutes.

If they cannot breach the safe within that 5 minutes that safe will receive their residential security container (RSC) certification and an identifying certification number. Always look for the UL certification. You probably won’t find it on a cheap safe, but if you’re spending up big then it’s important to see that certification.

6. The door and the lock

Most inexperienced burglars will attempt to break the hinges on a safe if they are external. As observed they are unlikely to enter even if they break the hinges because the hinges do not lock or secure the door, provided it is a quality safe.

A more experienced safecracker will work on the door and particularly on the lock. In an attempt to open it they may try to pry the dial off the lock to knock the tumblers through the back plate or drill the lock’s tumblers. They may attempt to punch in the handle shaft. They may attempt to drill the locks from the side and punch out the locking bolts.

So the quality of the door manufacturer and the locking mechanisms is very important. Often manufacturers use thicker steel on the door than elsewhere.

The quality of the locking bolts is very important. Best is locking bolts on all four sides of the doors, side to side and top to bottom.

And if the bolts are activated by a combination lock then the wheel mounted on the outside of the door will be one of the first places to be attacked, commonly by drilling.

It’s very important that the internal locking mechanism be protected against drilling. The best gun safes will have a hardened steel plate, or more than one, inside the door in front of the locking mechanism to protect it from drilling.

7. What type of lock should you choose?

Gun Safe Door SecurityThere’s basically 2 types of locks. Electronic and manual. There’s a range of different types of electronic locks including biometric scanners (fingerprint scanning) and keypads. Mechanical locks are your good old fashioned dial locks.

There’s positives and negatives to both. Electronic locks rely on a battery and if the batteries are not replaced will not work any longer. They are also more prone to breaking down. Mechanical locks, on the other hand, are reliable but much slower to use.

The traditional and time-honored lock that you have found on safes for generations is the rotary combination dial lock. This is the good old circular lock with the numbers around the outside of the dial which allows you to spin the dial to input the code.

These are still commonly available.

For peace of mind, the age old rotary combination is the most reliable and long lasting. Whilst it is slower to operate it should give you years or decades of trouble-free use.

Whilst the higher quality digital locks are generally reliable anything electronic can have its faults. They are quick to use, you just input the numbers into a keypad, or bang your finger on the recognition pad of a biometric lock, but are less reliable than traditional locks.

If you are choosing a rotary combination to choose a UL group 2 certified lock.

Much newer to the market are biometric gun safes, or in other words rifle cabinets that use some form of biometric identification. Biometric refers to identification by way of a physical characteristic.

The most common physical characteristic used on biometric safes is fingerprints. You preprogram your fingerprints into the safe and then have them scanned before opening. Or else the scanner will read your palm or hand or thumbprint.

Whilst it may not seem entirely secure to simply open a safe by placing your hand on it the reality is that nobody has the same fingerprints or palm prints as you and this provides the measure of security required. Should an unauthorized user try to open the safe using their fingerprint then, often after a number of permitted tries, the safe will lock down for a period of time.

It’s usually quite possible for a number of users to be programmed. So if three people are all permitted to access the contents then the fingerprints, or thumbprints, of all three can be programmed.

Some biometric safes even keep a computer record of every single opening attempt, and this can be accessed by the owner to see if there have been any unauthorized access attempts on the site.

It all seems simple and easy to use. However the technology is relatively new and we still favor the age-old and reliable technology rather than newer electronic technology which, in our view, has a higher risk of a fault.

8. The interior design of the safe

Most people don’t stop at one firearm. Almost inevitably you will end up with more.

It’s important to consider the future when researching your safe and buy one with sufficient space to allow for your family of weapons to expand.

Of course as your number of weapons increases you can stack them in as tightly as possible, but this results in all sorts of aggravation when you try and remove one from the back.

One of the best solutions is a rotating gun rack which allows you to store a significant number of weapons, and rotate the rack to both place a gun in it and to remove one at your ease. Not only that but rifles with a scope are placed scope inwards to help protect the scope.

Some cabinets come with their own racking units, however it is rarely appropriate for the many different types of weapons that are commonly found, and for this reason many owners of various types of weapons find the standard shelving to be inadequate for their needs. It is, however, not at all difficult to build your own shelving, exactly to your own specifications, with a little time, chipboard and effort. Whether you want stands, shelves, drawers or anything else the best way to get exactly what you need is to do it yourself. Design your own interior.

Many people also use their safe for protecting other valuables. Jewelry, paperwork, and documents or anything else that you would wish stolen, and which are valuable, can be stored in a safe if there is room. You buy a safe to protect your guns but you’ve also bought security for other items as well.

So before purchasing it well worth considering what other items you would like to put in there along with your guns, they will need space as well.

9. Fireproofing

Fireproofing refers to the ability of the safe to protect the contents inside in the event of an exterior fire.

Some people assume when they look at a safe that it’s so solid and heavy that anything inside must be protected against fire. This isn’t true, in the event of a fire the exterior of the safe will heat up gradually heating the interior to the point where the contents are damaged or destroyed.

A house fire can reach 1200 degrees or even more. That’s four times hotter than your average oven. And if the fire goes for, say, an hour, the safe needs to protect the contents against that those types of temperatures for the entire time. And longer in fact as a steel safe will stay hot for a long time after a fire has gone out.

It’s said by some that no safe is fully fireproof. That there are only degrees of fireproofing to protect the contents against certain temperatures for a certain length of time. To some extent, that’s probably true.

Fireproof safes are rated according to temperature and time, in other words how long the contents will last at what temperature fire. So, for example, a safe could be rated at a half an hour at 1200 degrees.

It’s very difficult to know how accurate fire ratings are. Many house fires reach temperatures higher than 1200 degrees and go for longer than half an hour. As well as that there is no standardized method of testing, or rating, the fireproof quality of a safe.fire proof gun safe
The best fireproofing rating is an independent one from UL. They will test safes at four different levels of fireproofing and, provided they pass, or offer certification. If the safe is rated at 1200/100 that means that it can withstand a 1200 degree fire for 100 minutes. The definition of withstanding is that the internal temperature does not rise over 275 degrees.

And fireproofing a safe has extraordinary complexities and not everyone agrees on the best way of doing so, or the best materials to do so. There isn’t even universal agreement on the temperature that the interior should remain below.

The best way to fireproof valuables, if you can afford it, is to buy a larger safe than you require and then buy another safe or fireproof box to use inside which will store your valuables, though it’s unlikely to store many guns. Doing that offers double protection against fire.

It’s also possible to get fireproof linings, which may extend the amount of time the contents will be protected.

However, it’s important to understand that if you are looking for a fireproof safe it will be much more expensive than non-fireproof safes.

There is no easy way. Looking for a UL certification is probably best, but that does not guarantee the contents of your safe will be protected in every fire. Some fires will destroy everything, no matter what.

10. Relockers

Also important to overall security are relockers. Relockers are a secondary locking mechanism which trigger during any attempted break in locking the safe down against opening.

This video explains more about re-lockers.
Note that if there is an attempted break in on your safe and the re-lockers are fired you will be unable to open it using the normal method. Contact the manufacturer or a locksmith to find out how to open your safe.

11. Other considerations

One thing always worth considering is the law. Because different states have different legislation it’s impossible to state exactly what legislation applies to you, because it varies from state to state.

However, it’s essential that, before you make any serious decisions, you investigate the law relating to guns and gun safes in the state in which you live.

We’ll give you an example. California. There are specific standards in the state of California that any gun safe needs to meet. You can find these standards at http://oag.ca.gov/firearms/gunsafe

So if you’re buying a rifle locker in California it should conform with those laws. Those laws specify the minimum requirements for the lock, including that the combinations shall number at least 10,000 and consist of a minimum of three numbers letters or symbols. The lock needs to be protected by case hardened drill resistant steel plating. There should be a minimum of three steel locking bolts at least a half an inch thick to create the locking mechanism, which must be operated by a separate handle and secured by the lock.

The law specifies a minimum of 12 gauge steel for a single walled safe and a minimum of two layers of 12 gauge steel or one layer of 7 gauge steel for the door. There are also specifications for the hinges.

(That’s just a summary, for a full description of the law follow the link above)

We cannot state the law for every single state in the US here. What we do tell you is to investigate exactly what the legal requirements are in your state before purchasing anything.
